About Gauloises cigarettes:
Gauloises Cigarettes first appeared in 1910, but it was only 40 years later when Filtered Gauloises Cigarettes appeared in the 1950's. At the beginning these cigarettes used dark tobacco, but in 1984 the brand was relaunched to an American type blend of light tobacco and renamed Gauloises Blondes. The brand is most famous for its very cigarettes' strength, especially in its original unfiltered version. A lower tar version of Gauloises Cigarettes are also available, sold in red and golden/white packets. Gauloises Cigarettes strong taste and romantic associations of France, make Gauloises a popular brand among many famous writers and artists. Today Gauloise Cigarettes remain a popular brand worldwide, as many smokers recognize their strong, pleasant taste and high-quality tobacco smoke.
Originally Gauloises cigarettes were unfiltered and very strong, made with Turkish and Syrian tobacco. Now they are filtered and called Gauloises Blondes (the original was black and there was a period when both versions were manufactured and offered, so the word “Blondes” was added to make a distinction). Regie Francais Tabacs was a huge corporation in which the government of the country had its share. The corporation was responsible for the control over the tobacco products consuming in the country and the profits were spent on various beneficial projects.
Smoking Gauloises in France was considered patriotic for quite a long time and the one who smoked Gauloises should have supported French national values. During the two World Wars smoking was often described as "the soldier's breakfast". And French soldiers smoked Gauloises cigarettes, of course.
WARNING! Smoking is dangerous and addictive!
