Lucky Strike - the way it happened
Lucky Strike is one of the oldest American cigarette trademarks. The brand was presented in 1871 by R.A. Patterson first as a company producing cut-plug chewing tobacco and only afterwards it started the production of cigarettes. The more intense development started only in 1905 after American Tobacco Company (ATC) had purchased this trademark.
In 1917 they presented their new slogan "It's Toasted!" meaning that a new method of tobacco drying was applied to the cigarettes. The method consisted in tobacco “toasting” instead of sun-drying. Due to the difference in the production process cheapest Lucky Strike cigarettes are said to have more fragrant and unique flavor. The inscription “L.S.M.F.T” which meant “Lucky Strike means fine tobacco” appeared on the package the very year.
In 1935 ATC started the sponsorship of the famous "Your Hit Parade" weekly radio-show and due to this show the popularity of the brand soared up and did not come down for the next 25 years. Hollywood actors advertised these cigarettes rather often those days. Even Douglas Fairbanks, “King of Hollywood”, had his endorsements as to the flavor of Luckies.
From the very beginning the cigarettes’ package color was dark green. And only in 1942 the traditional dark green package changed its color to the white one accompanied by the slogan “Lucky Strike Green has gone to war”. The company explained that this change was made because the copper used to achieve the green color was required for World War II needs. But actually the color was changed to make the package more modern and attractive for women-smokers to buy cigarettes online, as they evidently didn’t like green. So the War became a good cover to make the pack more stylish and patriotic at the same time.
In the 1960s the company presented menthol Luckies. They were called Lucky Strike Green alluding to their menthol component and not the very color of the pack.
In 2006 the Lucky Strike manufacturing was reduced in North America, but outside the USA Lucky Strike trademark still exists, British American Tobacco continues the popularization of the brand.
Lucky Strike cigarettes are regarded as the world’s most refined ones and have a faithful and true following. The brand is also a theme of an urban legend which states that every 20th cigarette in the pack contains marijuana. That is not true, of course.
These days you may buy cigarettes of this trademark nearly everywhere or order cigarettes online. Taking into account that now one can order a huge amount of products in online shops, these shops will probably offer you some discount cigarettes in order to keep their clients satisfied. So a typical customer soon finds out that purchase through the Internet provides him with cheap cigarettes and is very convenient. |
